Through leveraging carbon finance, we’re tackling critical issues like encroachment of bush, reduced ground water reserves and soil degradation in Namibia. In our pilot year (2024), the project will remove 12,000t CO - working with diverse application sites to explore how biochar carbon removal can restore balance not just in the atmosphere, but in the savannah ecosystem. This is the art of simple honest carbon removal.
Namibia faces a pressing issue with approximately 45 million hectares of land being encroached by 400 million tonnes of encroaching bush, which has been identified as a significant environmental hazard by the government. In the next 25 years alone, this abundance of bush can yield a staggering 224 million tonnes of CO2 removal.

Acacia: The Namibian National Agricultural Policy (2015) acknowledges the challenges posed by invasive plant species, particularly Acacia, which contribute to bush encroachment, desertification, and environmental degradation. The policy aims to establish supportive mechanisms for farmers to effectively combat bush encroachment in the short and long term while restoring the savannah where it is currently growing.
To find use cases for these biochar volumes, the project is developing pilot application sites to prove and evaluate the benefits of applying biochar to soil as an alternative to chemical fertiliser. The first 6,000 tonnes (around 12,000 credits) will be applied to farmland to improve the nutrient retention and water holding capacity of the soil.
